On June 20, 2003, Shenandoah
Miniature Training and
Foaling
Center
, Dr. Brett A. Spencer, DVM and Jeanne McClanahan began a study of
Embryo Transfer in the miniature horse.
Jeanne McClanahan supplied 3
recipient mares, 1 donor mare, and 1 stallion. All horses were
handled and all procedures were performed at Shenandoah Miniature
Training and
Foaling
Center
, by and under the supervision of Dr. Brett A. Spence, DVM.
The first successful
miniature horse embryo
transfer was performed on August 28, 2003.
Dr. Brett A. Spencer, DVM flushed a day 9 embryo from donor mare
Michigan
’s Golden Shilling.
The above donor mare, was bred
by live cover (hand bred) on August 17, 18, 19, 2003, at Shenandoah
Miniature Training and
Foaling
Center
, to Lil Darlings Cisco Kid. The resulting embryo was flushed and
implanted on August 28, 2003 into the recipient mare Hunt House Farms
Rogues Baby Face.
The foal resulting from this
embryo transfer was born on June 25, 2004 at 9:45 pm under the
supervision of Brandy Carpenter at Shenandoah Miniature Training and
Foaling
Center
. The foal, a colt was examined by Dr. Brett Spencer, DVM and
found to be sound, healthy and alert.
The foal was registered on July
30, 2004 as Lil Darling Ciscos Money 2 Burn, owned by Jeanne McClanahan.
All horses involved in the
transfer were DNA tested. All
mares were cultured and infused, if necessary, and a Stallion Evaluation
was performed. All horses
involved were under 34" tall.
This study is ongoing and
developing the guidelines for an effective Embryo Transfer Program for
the Miniature Horse. |
